Direct flights from Moscow to Tbilisi are resumed

Azimuth, Red Wings and Georgian Airways to operated direct flights from Moscow to Tbilisi

On Friday, May 19, 2023, a passenger plane from Russia successfully touched down in Georgia, marking the completion of the inaugural non-stop flight from Moscow to Tbilisi after a four-year pause. Azimuth, a Russian airline, operated the flight.

Later in the day, Georgian Airways will conduct a flight from Tbilisi to Moscow. As per an agreement between the regulatory bodies of Russia and Georgia, there will be a daily flight connecting the two capitals. Another Russian company, Red Wings, has revealed its intention to seek permission for flights to Georgia.

The decision to reinstate direct air travel between Georgia and Russia was made by the Georgian authorities, with the stipulation that only Russian companies not affected by Western sanctions would be permitted to operate flights to Georgia.

Following criticism from Washington, Georgian Prime Minister IIrakli Garibashvili proposed that the United States emulate Russia’s approach by implementing a visa-free system for Georgian citizens and facilitating direct flights to the country.

Following the halt of direct flights between Moscow and Tbilisi in 2019, Russian travelers primarily accessed Georgia by utilizing connecting flights via Yerevan, Armenia.
