Sky Express, a little Greek airline, started small. It used to have a few propeller-driven planes and flew between Greek islands. But it has grown a lot since then. Now, it flies to 35 places within Greece and 15 international destinations, and it wants to become an important player in Greek air travel.
Sky Express, also known as GQ/SEG, began in 2005 as Cretan Airlines SA. It’s based on the Greek island of Crete, with its main hub at Heraklion International Airport. The airline was created by Captain Miltiadis Tsagkarakis, who used to run the Greek national airline, Olympic Airways, and George Mavrantonakis, who used to be the Chief Operating Officer of Sky Express.
In July 2005, Sky Express had its first flight with a small fleet of propeller planes. It started by offering a few regular flights and also did charter flights, carried cargo, provided air taxis, medical evacuation services, and even scenic flights.
By 2011, the airline had more scheduled flights in Greece, and they had five British Aerospace Jetstream 41 planes, each carrying 29 passengers. They also partnered with the Finaval Group to create Sky Express Aircargo, offering air freight services on Sky Express and other routes.
Now, Sky Express has eight A320neos (and one leased A320ceo) planes. They got two big A321neo planes in March and May this year, each seating 242 passengers. The airline is still growing, adding more planes and more routes in Greece and across Europe.
Flights by Sky Express Airline
SKY Express presently offers services to 35 destinations across Greece. These destinations encompass a wide range, from major international airports to small airfields scattered throughout the Greek archipelago. The airline’s domestic network includes flights from its two primary operating hubs, Heraklion and Athens, to the following locations:
Alexandroupoli, Astypalaia, Chania, Chios, Corfu, Ikaria, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kasos, Kastoria, Kefalonia, Kos, Kostani, Kythera, Lemnos, Leros, Milos, Mykonos, Mytilene, Naxos, Paros, Preveza, Rhodes, Samos, Santorini, Sitia, Skiathos, Skyros, Syros, Thessaloniki, Volos, Zakynthos.
On the international front, Sy Express Airline operates European flights to a total of 15 destinations. These include Brussels, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, London (LHR), Larnaca (Cyprus), Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Milan, Munich, Nantes, Paris, Rome, Sofia, and Warsaw.
Recent Progress of Sky Express
SKY Express is a rapidly growing airline, a fact supported by its passenger statistics for 2022. Last year, SKY Express transported approximately 3.5 million passengers. Given its fleet expansion and the growth of its European routes, it is highly probable that this number will be surpassed in the current year. In 2022, the airline successfully completed 49,219 flights.
The airline currently has interline agreements in place with various international carriers, including Air France, Air Serbia, Air Transat, American Airlines, Condor, Delta, El Al, Emirates, KLM, Middle East Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Transavia.
Furthermore, in February 2022, the airline finalized a significant partnership with easyJet, allowing for seamless connections throughout Greece under this new arrangement. EasyJet passengers can now access connecting flights through SKY Express hubs located in Athens, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Zakynthos, Preveza, Kefalonia, Rhodes, Larnaca, Chania, Heraklion, and Thessaloniki.
