Durres was once a major port city in the Roman Empire. The ancient city of Durrës, also known as Epidamnos or Dyrrachium, was founded in the 7th century BCE by the Illyrians. The Romans conquered Durrës in 229 BCE and expanded it into a major port and military stronghold, making it one of the most important cities in the Roman province of Illyricum.
